Hi everyone,
Today marks the 7-year anniversary of Mystic’s publication. Here’s a photo of me and George R.R. Martin at his Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe, New Mexico from November 2015.
So yeah. Seven years. Wow.
I’ve written before about how difficult it is to promote a debut novel, especially when it’s the first in a series. You want to get people excited about the world, the characters, and the story. But you also have to say, “Hang on! The rest of the story will come later!” And in my case with the Mystic Trilogy, it would be seven years.
A lot changed in that time. The world changed. I changed. You, the reader, changed. And the story changed. The latter was always by design. Mystic Dragon and Mystic Skies were always meant to be very different books from Mystic. As Pomella aged and experienced life, her needs and desires would change. I like that. Viewing life from a wider perspective is something I love to write about.
So yeah. 7-years. The number feels mystical in its own way.
That said, I have no intention of ever taking that long to finish a series again. This is a big reason why I’m planning for my next project to be a standalone novel. We’ll see if that happens!
